Our First Day with the South Carolina Democratic Party

After a great discussion with Meg Kinnard, we went to the South Carolina Dems for the first time for the week. We got to meet Christale Spain, the party chair, and Jay Parmley, the executive director, who both spoke to us about what the state party does. We learned that Christale is actually the first black female chair ever in South Carolina! This is the first time I learned about how in South Carolina there is no party registration and there is an open primary, meaning that anyone pick whichever primary they want to vote in. This is much different than Florida, where we have to register in one of the two main parties to vote in a primary, and it is closed, so people cannot cross their party registration to vote in a different primary. Everyone was so kind and informative at the SCDP, and I can't wait to go back again later.

We went to a very fun local diner called Lizard's Thicket, and it was a very nice atmosphere that let us get a sense of the local energy.

After lunch, we got to go back to the SCDP to get some more phone banking in, inviting people to vote, or to a local party convention.

Remember those USC students from the Nikki Haley bus tour stop? We just happened to see them through the window while we were making calls! It was complete coincidence, and it was super cool to reconnect with them!
